How to fix house water pressure

Updated: May 17, 2023

Equipment might be damaged if the water pressure is too low or high. The standard or high water pressure might be a problem if you can't wash your dishes simultaneously as watering the yard, so check your water supply.

If you have low water pressure in your whole community, you may have a more significant issue. There may not be much you can do if all of your neighbors have poor water pressure. If just a few areas of your home are experiencing low water pressure, you may have a problem with your home's pipes or valves.

Don't allow your status as the host with the most to be tarnished by inadequate water pressure! Make a promise to yourself and your future home visitors that you'll finally have a good flow of water by implementing the following remedies, which vary from simple tweaks to more involved undertakings.

Contact your neighbors

To begin, a few details must be addressed. Check with your neighbors to see whether they have the same water pressure issues as you. If this is the case, the problem may be with the city's municipal water supply. ' Leaks and blockages are just as common in municipal pipes as they are in your own house.

Check your well pump.

The well in your house may need to be checked if your water pressure is dropping. Wells driven deep into the earth provide water to specific residences, while municipal water supplies give water to others. There are times when you'll want to get your jet pumps, or submersible pumps serviced too.

Test the pressure yourself.

Using a water pressure test gauge with a hose connection, you may check the water pressure in your house. Before turning on the tap, ensure that all other faucets and water-using equipment are switched off. Experts say that 45 or 50 psi readings are too low, 60 is a fair number, and 80 or above is excessive.

Clear the clogs

Mineral deposits in your pipes may accumulate over time. Pipes may get clogged in severe circumstances when the diameter of the tubes reduces. This results in a dribble in the shower or a dribble from the faucet, which isn't much better. Some blockages need the replacement of pipe portions, although only the most extreme situations necessitate this.

Place a vinegar-filled ziplock bag over your shower head and secure it with a thread if desired. Put your bathroom back together the following day after cleaning your fixtures. Call a plumber if this approach doesn't help you get more water pressure.

Open your main water valve.

Performing basic repairs and maintenance might result in the main valve being mistakenly shut off. It's possible that a contractor merely partly reopened the valve after shutting off the main water supply. One of the simplest methods to boost your home's water pressure is to open a half-closed valve. A plumber isn't necessary to adjust the valve since it's simple to do it yourself.

Replace the regulator

Regulators are often found at the water meter or where the service line enters households that use public water. Gradually decreasing pressure results in a loss of velocity when the regulator malfunctions. If the issue persists, try resetting or replacing the component in question, or contact a plumber to do the job for you.

Look out for leaks

Water leaks that steal water from your pipes might be caused by cracked or broken pipes. To check whether your mainline has been damaged, turn off all of your interior and outdoor faucets. Plastic or copper pipes of better quality are recommended to replace your existing lines. A plumber's expertise is required when it comes to replacing pipes.

According to experts, replacing outdated plumbing with new pipes may enhance the quality of your shower and lessen the risk of future leaks. Consequently, your drinking water will be cleaner and more potable thanks to installing new pipes.

Install a home water pressure booster.

Pressure is reduced by gravity and distance, two elements that affect it. The water pressure might be reduced if it travels a long-distance or uphill from the municipal water source to reach your home. Installing a water pressure booster pump might help enhance the water's flow rate once it gets to your house.

Booster pumps for water pressure typically cost between $200 and $400, while some may cost much more. Installation (which is best left to a qualified plumber) and an increase in your power bill is not included in the price.

There are several ways to improve water pressure in your house, from installing an on-demand water booster to opening a half-shut valve. You can boost your home's water pressure with a bit of study, some knowledge, and (if necessary) expert assistance.
