Size Matters: Renters Prioritizing Space And Price Over Location

A recent survey by Storeys reveals that renters across Canada are shifting their priorities when it comes to housing. Instead of focusing on location, many are now more concerned about getting affordable rent and larger spaces. This change in preference reflects the rising costs of living, making affordability and space essential for many tenants.

While location was once a top priority, renters are becoming more flexible about where they live, choosing areas outside city centers if it means paying less and enjoying larger homes. This trend is also partly due to remote work, which has made living near workplaces less important.

Many renters are even willing to compromise on amenities or proximity to transit if it means saving on rent. As affordability becomes more of a struggle in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver, these shifts in preferences are becoming more pronounced, leading some renters to relocate to suburban or rural areas.

Overall, it’s clear that in today’s market, size and price are outweighing location when it comes to making housing decisions, signaling a significant change in what renters value most in their search for homes.
